Lava Java Coffee opened its doors in 2002 in Ridgefield, Washington — a small city just north of the Oregon border that was, at the time, little more than a quiet farming community. The dream was simple: bring world-class espresso to a place that didn't yet know it needed it.
Our founder, Phuong Tran spent years studying and researching espresso technique, traveling all over the world to understand the supply chain, and building relationships with producers and roasters who shared her values. She went on to earn one of the most competitive titles in specialty coffee by winning the United States Barista Championship in 2005.
We partner directly with local roasters to bring you single-origin beans, ethically sourced, small-batches roasted right in the heart of the Pacific Northwest. Celebrating our community is another big focus as well. We're always working hard to give back and support the many partnerships in our local community.

An itsy-bitsy Portland roaster founded by Duane Sorenson — the same coffee maker who built Stumptown into a third-wave pioneer. Hand-roasted micro lots, small-batch single origins, and blends crafted with obsessive attention to detail. A natural continuation of the Portland-roaster partnerships that have defined Lava Java since day one.
